The Year in Music and going to Pitchfork

Hello Followers,

I’m not sure what you’ve been thinking of the (not-so) new year in music, but I’ve been sorely disappointed. By this time last year, I had a top 10 already created. At the moment, I have a hard time listing five albums that really grabbed me. Here’s hoping the year picks up.

Anyway, I just picked up tickets to this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival. So, if you’re going, or in Chicago, please let me know.

I will admit, of all of this year’s newest releases, my two favorites are the new Grimes record, “Visions”, and Sharon Van Etten’s “Tramp”.

Grows on Me: Codes and Keys

Some albums need a little time to love.

I felt this way about TV on the Radio’s latest album, Nine Types of Light, a few weeks earlier. I don’t know if it is the expectation of the release, or due to the fact that the band arguably hit their peak on a previous record, but I definitely feel this way about Death Cab for Cutie’s Codes and Keys.

The first listen of this album back when released was a complete let down. It sounded tame, retreaded, and simplistic. For these reasons, I didn’t listen to this album again until about five months later. I’m now addicted to the album. It does have its charm. While not being Death Cab’s best album by any means, Codes and Keys is still not as bad as I pegged it. The first half of the way is considerably weaker than the second half. After the single, You are a Tourist, the album kicks into a sound more familiar to long time Death Cab for Cutie fans. In fact, I think the second half is what sold me on this album.

This is why I buy CDs. If I didn’t own this album, I would never have given it a second chance.

The first single off of the critically acclaimed new M83 album, Hurry Up, I’m Dreaming, is absolutely stellar. When I first heard a leak of the track, I flipped out. It could be due to the fact that I haven’t heard anything from Anthony Gonzalez in nearly three years. (I missed you, man) I played it at work. I played it on long runs. I played it before going to bed. I played it before going out. Seriously, I could go on for hours.

Either way, I’m not complaining. I just bought the two-disc album the other day and I plan on devouring it.

I'm Back: Part Three

It is almost the end of the year and I’ve been absolutely nonexistent in the tumblr world. (I think my last login was way back in June) To be perfectly honest, I was getting a little overwhelmed with staying up to date all the time. But, after much soul searching and reflecting, I’m ready to get back into the game in full swing. The time off has helped me hone in on why I started this tumblr in the first place. You can expect videos, reviews and more in the next few weeks.
